Summary

Advanced Visual Information-Motion Media (AVI-M) Marines are the 45XX occupational field enlisted visual information specialists, specifically trained and experienced in motion media (cinematography) disciplines.

Master-level cinematographers, AVI-M Marines serve as the Service’s advanced storytellers through their extensive education and experience in visual communication disciplines.

AVI-M Marines use multidisciplinary techniques and elements to create master-level visual communication products that present compelling stories with strong visual impact and that can be used in multiple formats across a wide range of communication spaces.

They are responsible for conducting technical training and education in the cinematography discipline to Fleet Marine Force and Supporting Establishment Communication Strategy and Operations (COMMSTRAT) Marines and will develop training plans that ensure individual and collective Training and Readiness task compliance.

AVI-M Marines will directly supervise the implementation of the 45XX indoctrination and managed-on-the job training (MOJT) programs related to 4571 technical skillsets and provide 1st-level validation of skills competency.

AVI-M Marines will mentor junior Marines in the technical disciplines cinematography and provide technical counsel to senior COMMSTRAT staff non-commissioned officers and officers regarding visual communication theory, application, and capabilities.

Prerequisites

Must possess PMOS: 4512, 4541, 4571, or 4591.

Requirements

Successfully complete the Department of Defense-Sponsored Military Motion Media (MMM) Course (C2446P1), Military Visual Journalism program at S.I.

Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

Waiver of course completion will be considered when specialized university training in motion media (cinematography) has been completed.

Submit transcript to 45XX OccFld Sponsor from an accredited university or professional civilian film/cinematography school to certify completion of a minimum of 30 semester hours (or equivalent quarter hours) of cinematography curriculum with correlating courses in: Communications and Society, Cross-Media and Digital News Writing, Television and Digital News Reporting, Sight, Sound and Motion, Sound for Picture, Advanced Multimedia, Documentary Writing and Production, Still Imaging for Multimedia Production, Lighting and Lenses, Motion Graphics, Communications Law for Journalists, Design and Production.

Include copies of course descriptions from university or civilian film school catalog.
