4821 - Career Counselor

Summary

The Career Counselor serves as the commander’s primary advisor for enlisted retention matters and is crucial in guiding and assisting enlisted personnel in their career development across Marine Corps enlisted components.

The Career Counselor must be thoroughly knowledgeable of the reenlistment process, to include prospecting, reenlistment ceremonies, career information programs, and associated policies.

They further provide valuable guidance and support to service members.

This MOS will be assigned and voided only by the authority of the CMC (MM).

Prerequisites

Must possess a GT score of 100 or higher.

Must meet the prerequisites prescribed in reference (bj).

Security requirement: Secret security clearance eligibility.

Marines conducting lateral moves to the 4821 MOS must possess secret clearance eligibility.

Marines who are reenlisting must possess an adjudicated secret security clearance or favorably adjudicated national agency check/local agency check prior finalizing their reenlistment.

Requirements

Complete Basic Career Planner Course (M0881D6), MCRD San Diego, CA.

Failure to attend and complete the PMOS training may result in an PMOS reclassification or separation per current MMEA and RA guidelines and applicable MCOs.

Advanced Career Planner Course (M08KZ91) is designed for Career Planners who currently are or will be taking on the functions and duties of a Career Planner SNCOIC.

Once a Career Planner has obtained the rank of staff sergeant, they are required to attend the Advance Career Planning Course (ACPC) within 2 years or prior to assignment to a career planner SNCOIC billet, whichever is less.

Duties

Coordinate with the commander and sergeant major on developing, coordinating, and implementing retention campaign plans that provide education on retention, career progression, and development programs focused on meeting retention goals.

Provide executive guidance and counseling regarding career opportunities, promotions, special duty assignments, and professional development.

Provide fundamental manpower Professional Military Education and briefings to Marine Corps units concerning career progression/development programs.

Schedule and conduct interviews with service members, providing individual career counseling to assist in sound career decision-making.

Assist service members in exploring and evaluating their education, training, interests, and capabilities to set goals and make informed career decisions.

Conduct preliminary screening and administrative processing, ensuring accurate and efficient completion of necessary documents such as reenlistment, lateral move, and extension forms.

Maintain records related to reenlistment, lateral moves, special duty assignments, reserve contracts, Prior Service Enlisted Program/continuous reenlistments, Selective Retention Bonus Program, and career counseling, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulations.

Collect and examine retention and attrition data, conducting trend analysis to identify areas for improvement and develop targeted strategies.

Identify job skills and training opportunities that enhance and boost service members’ job satisfaction.

Coordinate required tests, interviews, and physicals for lateral move candidates.
