5769 - Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Defense Chief

Summary

The CBRN Defense Chief serves as a CBRN defense SME to advise the staff and coordinate CBRN defense, reconnaissance, and decontamination operations.

CBRN Defense Chiefs plan, coordinate and monitor the employment of unit CBRN defense, reconnaissance, and decontamination equipment, and attached capabilities, and serve in the unit combat operations center to perform CBRN warning and reporting, and coordinate CBRN response activities.

In addition to advising the Commander on the operational and technical functions associated with CBRN defense, CBRN reconnaissance, CBRN response, and CBRN decontamination, senior-level management Marines (MGySgt to MSgt) also advise the commander and staff on events related to supporting countering weapons of mass destruction (CWMD) in support of combatant command lines of effort and objectives within the supported area of operations.

CBRN Defense Chiefs at MSC and higher or joint commands are responsible to assist the CBRN Defense Officer with integrating the execution of CWMD in plans, exercises, and operations through organization, training, and planning.

They support operations across the spectrum of special operations as fully integrated special staff members in a variety of special operations forces or joint task organized configurations.

Prerequisites

Must possess PMOS 5711.

Security requirement: Active adjudicated secret clearance prior to attendance of the USMC CBRN Defense Chief Course, Ft Leonard Wood, MO.

For MSgt/MGySgt: must meet sensitive compartmented information (SCI) eligibility guidelines based on a single scope background investigation (SSBI)/Tier 5 (T5) investigation.

This is required in performance of duties associated with MARFOR to MSC and joint billet(s).

Requirements

Attain promotion to SSgt.

CBRN Defense Specialists MOS 5711 terminates at staff sergeant.

As such, completion of the CBRN Defense Chief’s Course (A16KJK4) at Ft Leonard Wood, MO is required within two years after selection to the grade of staff sergeant.
