Summary

Helicopter Crew Chiefs, UH-1; are flight crew members who, when assigned to the flight schedule, are responsible to the pilot in command while in operation of the aircraft and associated mission/weapons systems.

When not assigned to the flight schedule they report to their respective work center within the maintenance department where they inspect, service, maintain, and repair power plants, transmissions, drivetrains, fuel systems, flight control systems, and rotor systems.

Prerequisites

Must be U.S.

citizen (no waivers).

Must pass a rigorous flight physical.

Must have a five year term of enlistment.

Must have a WS-B(+) water survival qualification.

Must pass the normal color perception test (no waivers).

Security requirement: secret security clearance eligibility.

Volunteer for duties involving flight as an aircraft crewmember.

Meet the requirements of reference (ah), and (ai) with normal depth perception.

Must possess an EL score of 105 or GT score of 105 or MM score of 105 or higher.

Vision no worse than 20/70 in one eye and 20/100 in the other with overall vision correctable to 20/20.

Must complete the following course(s): Naval Aircrewmember Candidate School Course (N2373C3).

UH-1Y Marine Enlisted Aircrew Training Course (M23KCV3).

Duties

For a complete listing of duties and tasks, refer to reference(s): (ad) COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2; (bn) NAVMC 4790.1; and (bo) NAVMC 3500.14: Assist in operational/tactical flight planning as necessary.

Assist in pre-flight/post flight inspection of the aircraft.

Assist in start-up/shut down of the aircraft.

Assist in landing and takeoff procedures of aircraft.

Assist in obstacle detection/avoidance while aircraft is in operation.

Assist with in-flight navigation.

Assist with threat detection/evasion/suppression.

Embark/debark/secure passengers and cargo.

Operate aircraft/mission/weapons systems.

Liaison between pilots and ground personnel.

Identify and diagnosis in-flight aircraft/mission/weapons systems malfunctions.

Employ operational/crew/tactical resource management principles.

Perform a multitude of ground handling duties such as, but not limited to, taxi directing of aircraft, towing of aircraft, refueling of aircraft, securing/un-securing of aircraft, etc.

Perform ground maintenance tasks and repairs on aircraft/mission/weapons systems.

Perform aircraft cleaning.

Interpret technical manual/correspondence (i.e.

instructions, drawings, and/or diagrams).

Identify and diagnosis aircraft/mission/weapon systems malfunctions.

Document all aircraft inspections, maintenance, and repairs in a maintenance management database system.

Order parts and materials needed for maintenance/repairs.

Provide training via self-paced readings, formal lectures, labs, and on-the-job training to individuals in the performance of both their in-flight and ground maintenance duties.

Basic computer skills.

Be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite.

Strong written and verbal communications skills are necessary in the performance of their duties.

Utilize a multitude of information management systems.

Utilize aircrew training management database system to track aircrew training progression and qualifications.

Utilize maintenance training management database systems, to track maintenance training progression and qualifications.

Planning/scheduling/management of personnel and assets to varying degrees which increases with each promotion in rank.

Sgt and below-job/task leader.

SSgt-shift supervisor/enlisted aircrew training manager.

GySgt-work center supervisor/division chief.

Create and manage a training plan for career progression of Marines and sustainment of required aircrew and maintenance skills/qualifications.

For career progression Marines should seek to hold the following billets and obtain the corresponding qualifications: LCpl-Plane Captain.

Cpl-Collateral Duty Inspector or Night Systems Instructor.

Sgt-Collateral Duty Inspector and Weapons and Tactics Instructor.

In addition to the above qualifications/billets, the ranks of SSgt and GySgt should hold a minimum qualification of Collateral Duty Inspector (ready to be a Collateral Duty Quality Assurance Representative as required by squadron needs) and Weapons and Tactics Instructor.

Additionally, they should seek to hold the following billets/qualifications: Quality Assurance (Quality Assurance Representative), Maintenance Control (Safe-For-Flight Qualified).
