6516 - Ordnance Quality Assurance/Safety Observer

Summary

Aviation Ordnance, Flight Equipment, or Aircraft Safety Mechanic Quality Assurance/Safety Observers (QA/SO’s) assigned to Organizational, Intermediate level work centers, Station Weapons, and Marine Training Units (schoolhouses) shall monitor and enforce safe handling of explosives and adherence to established procedures during all explosive ordnance evolutions.

QA/SO’s are responsible to the Commanding Officer and are qualified/certified by the designated Ordnance Officer via By Direction authority.

At the Organizational level, Aviation Ordnance QA/SO’s supervise weapons inspections, loading, downloading and storage of ancillary explosive components as well as the build-up of electronic countermeasures related to the T/M/S of their assigned unit.

Flight Equipment QA/SO’s supervise the inspection, maintenance, and repair of applicable Aircrew Survival Equipment, while Aircraft Safety Mechanic QA/SO’s supervise the inspection, maintenance, and repair of aircraft centered safety equipment and systems.

At the Intermediate level and Station Weapons, Aviation Ordnance QA/SO’s supervise the breakout, buildup/ assembly, testing & programming, delivery & receipt, storage, and logistical efforts for all weapons associated with the T/M/S flying squadrons they support, while Flight Equipment QA/SO’s supervise the inspection, maintenance, and repair of Aircrew Life Support Systems.

Prerequisites

65xx: MOS 65xx formal schools training, explosive handlers physical, and arms, ammunition & explosives (AA&E) screening.

6048 or 628X: Completion of naval explosives safety for supervisors & managers (AMMO-49-DL), explosive handler’s physical, and arms, ammunition, and explosives (AA&E) screening.

Requirements

Previously qualified and certified as a team leader, successfully complete the applicable QASO qualification/certification syllabus, and designated as a QASO by the qualification/certification board chairman upon the successful completion of a qualification/certification board.
