6802 - Meteorological and Oceanographic (METOC) Services Officer
Summary
Meteorological and Oceanographic (METOC) Service Officers plan, direct, and lead METOC operations at all levels of the operating forces and the supporting establishment.
They are subject matter experts on all aspects of the METOC discipline and the application of it within the decision-making process.
Operating force billet assignments: operating force billet assignments for this officer include marine expeditionary forces, marine air wings, intelligence battalions; littoral anti-air battalions, marine littoral regiment, and marine air traffic control companies within the marine air control squadrons.
Non-operating forces billet assignments for this officer include deputy commandant for information, HQMC, director of intelligence; deputy commandant for aviation, aviation enablers; chief of naval operations, N2N6E; naval information warfare center pacific; marine corps air stations; marine corps detachment Keesler AFB; marine aviation weapons & tactics squadron one; and marine corps intelligence schools.
METOC Officers require excellent verbal and written communication skills, advanced competency in meteorology and littoral oceanography, and comprehension of geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) concepts.
Prerequisites
Must meet eligibility and appointment criteria as prescribed in MCO 1040.42B, WO and LDO accession programs.
Security requirement: must have a current single scope background investigation/T5 investigation and adjudicated for sensitive compartmented information (SCI) eligibility.
Marines applying for selection as 6802 warrant officer must have: MOS 6842; the journeyman METOC analyst forecaster designation; and successfully served five or more years in a 6842 billet.
LDO Program: officers applying to the MOS 6802 LDO program must hold the 6802 MOS as CWOs; have the NMOS 6877; have a journeyman METOC officer (JMO) designation; and achieve selection by the board to LDO.
Requirements
METOC Warrant Officers are required to complete the following courses: Complete the Warrant Officer Basic Course (WOBC) (M02RMN4) within 18 months of appointment.
Complete the METOC Officer Course (N469752), Marine Corps Intelligence Schools, Dam Neck, VA after graduation from WOBC.
Any 6802 who has not completed the METOC Officer Course within two years of appointment will be considered unqualified and subject to termination.
METOC Officers who were commissioned prior to 2022 are exempt from this requirement.
METOC Chief Warrant Officers are required to complete the following courses: Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course (M14P2A1).
Joint METOC Officers Course (JS-DDGO).
Introduction to the Joint Capabilities Integration & Development System (CLR 101).
Core Concepts for Requirements Management (RQM 110).
Fundamentals of Systems Acquisition Management (ACQ 101).
METOC LDO Captains are required to complete the following courses: Fundamentals of Systems Engineering (ENG 101).
Cost Analysis (CLB 007).
Introduction to Earned Value Management (CLV 016).
The following courses are recommended as a technical skills progression course Tropical Weather Analysis and Forecasting Course (F020321) and Space 200 Course (F25M013).
