8071 - Special Operations Capability Specialist

Summary

Special Operations Capabilities Specialists (SOCS) provide specialized capability in support of the special operations core activities of foreign internal defense (FID), security force assistance (SFA), direct action (DA), special reconnaissance (SR), counter-terrorism (CT), support to military information support operations (MISO), support to unconventional warfare (UW), and support to countering weapons of mass destruction (CWMD) as part of the marine forces special operations command (MARFORSOC).

SOCS possess high levels of maturity, experience, judgment and the ability to rapidly apply critical thought to operational objectives.

They are capable of operations across the entire spectrum of special operations, from employment in isolated and austere locales with little-to-no conventional support to operations as fully integrated units in a variety of joint task organized configurations.

(1) SOCS B Summary.

The SOCS B is the commander’s link to joint fire support across the range of military operations.

SOCS B specialize in requesting, planning and controlling assault support, surface to surface, sea to surface, air to surface, kinetic, non-kinetic, manned and unmanned fire support or intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) assets.

The SOCS B is eminently qualified to plan request and control fires from any domain in any environment.

(1) SOCS C Summary.

SOCS C are trained multi-disciplined, tactical, technical, communications professionals able to expose, consume, and exploit communications to enable the operational commander to make rapid, and fully informed decisions at all levels of command.

SOCS C’s must seize opportunities presented by emerging technologies that successfully leverages innovation in automation and artificial intelligence.

By managing communications platforms, and data as a critical asset, they better inform the decisions making cycle while positioning special operations forces (SOF) to exploit cutting edge analytical techniques.

SOCS-Cs at the MSOT/MSOC/SOTF/CJSOTF are able to plan, install, operate, maintain, and defend joint networks, services and information required to support the full spectrum of distributed special operations, which includes joint, interagency, intergovernmental, and multinational operations.

(1) SOCS D Summary.

SOCS D are multi-purpose canine (MPC) handers that provide the following K-9 capabilities: detection, tracking, searches, controlled aggression and psychological deterrence.

(1) SOCS E Summary.

SOCS-E are manned, trained, and equipped to support all SOF core activities and operations assigned to MARSOC.

SOCS E provide the four pillars of MARSOF EOD support: assault support, technical support and technical surveillance, support to SOF sensitive site exploitation (SSE), and support to theater CWMD efforts.

(1) SOCS-F Marines are team-oriented but are trained and ready to operate independently or as members of an element, team, company, battalion or regiment.

At the team level, the SOCS-F Marine provides full spectrum intelligence and electromagnetic warfare (EW) support to planning, conducts force protection/indications and warnings, foreign intelligence collections, operational preparation of the environment (OPE), special reconnaissance (SR), tactical cyber operations and targeting.

At the company and battalion level, the SOCS-F Marine coordinates SOF SIGINT/EW support for all assigned SOF, conducts SIGINT analysis and reporting, provides intelligence support to planning, and coordinates electronic warfare operations.

The SOCS-F will communicate and coordinate between joint, interagency, and foreign partners throughout the execution of their mission.

The SOCS-F is a multi-disciplined intelligence Marine who will train in and be capable of utilizing other intelligence and non-intelligence techniques in order to enhance their primary mission of SIGINT/EW operations.

(1) SOCS G Marines are team-oriented but are trained and ready to operate independently or as members of an element, team, company, battalion, or regiment.

At the team level, the SOCS-G Marine provides imagery and geospatial intelligence support for mission planning, operational preparation of the environment (OPE), special reconnaissance (SR), support to targeting, provides intelligence surveillance (ISR) reconnaissance tactical control of manned/unmanned aerial collection platforms, and manages collection operations and requirements.

At the company level and battalion level, the SOCS-G coordinates collection operations and leverages national, theater and local level ISR to support mission planning and targeting and provides geospatial intelligence support for mission planning and targeting for all assigned SOF.

The SOCS-G will communicate and coordinate between joint, interagency, and foreign partners throughout the execution of their mission.

The SOCS-G is a multi-disciplined intelligence Marine who will train in and be capable of utilizing other intelligence and nonintelligence techniques to enhance their primary mission of geospatial/imagery intelligence operations.

(1) SOCS-H Marines are team-oriented but are trained and ready to operate independently or as members of an element, team, company, battalion, or regiment.

At the team level, the SOCS-H Marine provides intelligence and sensitive activities support to planning, conducts force protection, insider threat, collections against foreign intelligence entities, advanced force operations (AFO), operational preparation of the environment (OPE), special reconnaissance (SR), and targeting.

At the company and battalion level, the SOCS-H Marine coordinates SOF CI/HUMINT and sensitive activities support for all assigned SOF, conducts CI/HUMINT analysis, and provides intelligence support to planning.

The SOCS-H will communicate and coordinate between joint, interagency, and foreign partners throughout the execution of their mission.

The SOCS-H is a multi-disciplined intelligence Marine who will train in and be capable of utilizing other intelligence and nonintelligence techniques in order to enhance their primary mission of CI/HUMINT operations.

(1) SOCS-I Marines are team-oriented but are trained and ready to operate independently or as members of an element, team, company, battalion or regiment.

SOCS-Is provide intelligence support at the tactical, operational, and strategic level.

At the team level, the SOCS-I Marine provides fused multi-disciplined intelligence in support of collections, force protection/indications and warnings, mission planning and execution, operational preparation of the environment (OPE), special reconnaissance (SR), and targeting.

At the company and battalion level, the SOCS-I Marine coordinates and directs the multidisciplined intelligence support for all assigned SOF, conducts intelligence analysis and reporting, provides intelligence support to planning, targeting, and coordinates intelligence operations.

The SOCSI Marine will communicate and coordinate between joint, interagency, and foreign partners throughout the execution of their mission.

The SOCS-I is a multi-disciplined intelligence Marine who will train in and be capable of utilizing other intelligence and non-intelligence techniques in order to enhance their primary mission of all source intelligence operations.

(1) SOCS L Summary.

SOCS L are multi-disciplined logisticians and supply professionals who are able to execute: operational-level theater mobility & distribution planning; joint automated information systems; field ordering officer(s)/pay agent(s); service & special operations-peculiar ammunition management and handling; and joint sustainment planning.

(1) SOCS M Summary.

SOCS M are multi-disciplined MARSOF mechanics who are able to diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide range of service common, non-standard, or indigenous automotive vehicles, and engines or generators.

(1) SOCS O Summary.

SOCS O are MARSOF armorers who are trained to maintain service common and SOF unique equipment.

(1) SOCS U Summary.

The SOCS U operates, instructs, and evaluates on all organic group 1/2 unmanned aircraft system (UAS), echelon 0 organic precision strike, counter UAS, and unmanned ground systems (UGS) in support of small units at the tactical edge conducting distributed operations.

Prerequisites

SOCS Common prerequisites: No courts martial convictions.

Must be worldwide deployable.

No adverse fitness reports within the last 12 months.

No derogatory Page 11 entries within the last 12 months.

No incidents with drug use or possession while in service.

Must be screened in accordance with the SOCS screening checklist.

Must be a LCpl or above with a minimum of (30) months time in service.

Must be duty status (1) and show zero in duty limits to receive orders to MARFORSOC.

No NJPs within the last 12 months and with no more than two NJPs during current contract.

Must physically perform the USMC physical fitness test (PFT) during the SOCS screening process and achieve a minimum of a third class PFT score.

Must physically perform the USMC combat fitness test (CFT) during the SOCS screening process and achieve a minimum of a third class CFT score.

Must physically perform the Marine Corps Water Survival Training Program (MCWSTP) and achieve a minimum of water survival basic (WSB) during the SOCS screening process.

Security requirement: must have final secret eligibility based on national agency check, law enforcement and credit check (NACLC); or T3 background investigation prior to attending Special Operations Training Course (STC) or Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape (SERE) Full Spectrum Course.

Interim secret clearance eligibility will not be accepted.

Note: Any administrative action, adverse in nature, or jeopardy on contract will require a COMMARFORSOC waiver to attend their respective SOF Fundamentals Course.

SOCS B prerequisites: Must be sergeant and above.

Must possess MOS 0861, Fire Support Marine.

Must possess MOS 8002, Joint Terminal Attack Controller.

SOCS C prerequisites: Security requirement: current single scope background investigation/T5 investigation and must meet sensitive compartmented information (SCI) eligibility guidelines.

Note: Marines who have graduated from the Special Operations Communicator Operator Training Course (SOC-OTC); and a Full Spectrum SERE Course (N51M5Q1), will meet all the requirements for the NMOS 8071.

SOCS-C.

Funding and attendance at SOC-OTC is managed by the Joint Communications Unit (JCU).

Must possess one of the following MOSs: 0621, Transmissions System Operator; 0627, Satellite Transmissions Systems Operator; 0629, Transmissions Chief; 0631, Network Operator; 0639, Network Chief; 0671, Data Systems Administrator; 0679, Data systems Chief; 0681, Information Security Technician; 0699, Communications Chief; 2831, Digital Wideband Systems Maintainer; 2841, Ground Electronics Transmission Systems Maintainer; 2847, Ground Electronics Telecommunications and Information Technology Systems Maintainer; 2862, Ground Electronics Systems Maintenance Technician; or 2891, Ground Electronics Systems Maintenance Chief.

SOCS D prerequisites: Must possess MOS 5811, Military Police.

SOCS E prerequisites: Must possess MOS 2336, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician.

Must be a sergeant and above.

Must pass a special operations duty medical exam prior to receiving orders to MARFORSOC.

Must physically perform the USMC PFT during the SOCS E screening process and achieve a first class PFT score.

Must physically perform the USMC CFT during the SOCS E screening process and achieve a first class CFT score.

Security requirement: must have a current single scope background investigation/T5 investigation and meet sensitive compartmented information (SCI) eligibility guidelines.

Must physically perform the Marine Corps Water Survival Training Program (MCWSTP) and achieve a minimum of water survival intermediate (WS-I) during the SOCS E screening process.

SOCS F prerequisites: No hearing defects.

Must successfully complete a counterintelligence (CI) scope polygraph.

Security requirement: must have a current single scope background investigation/T5 investigation and meet sensitive compartmented information (SCI) eligibility guidelines.

Must possess MOSs: 2621, Signals Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Operator/Analyst; 2629, Signals Intelligence/Electronic Warfare Technician; 2631, Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) Analyst; 2641, Cryptologic Language Analyst; 2651, ISR Systems Engineer; 2659, Intelligence Technology and Data Chief or; 2691, SIGINT/EW/CO Chief.

SOCS G prerequisites: Must have normal color vision and normal stereoscopic acuity verified by a medical officer.

Must possess MOSs 0241, Imagery Analysis Specialist, or 0261, Geospatial Intelligence Specialist.

Security requirement: must have a current single scope background investigation/T5 investigation and meet sensitive compartmented information (SCI) eligibility guidelines.

SOCS H prerequisites: Must possess MOS 0211, CI/HUMINT Specialist.

Must successfully complete a CI scope polygraph examination.

Security requirement: must have a current single scope background investigation/T5 investigation and meet sensitive compartmented information (SCI) eligibility guidelines.

SOCS I prerequisites: Must possess MOS 0231, Intelligence Specialist.

Security requirement: must have a current single scope background investigation/T5 investigation and meet sensitive compartmented information (SCI) eligibility guidelines.

SOCS L prerequisites: Must possess MOSs 0411, Maintenance Management Specialist; 0431, Logistics/ Embarkation Specialist; 0451 Airborne and Air Delivery Specialist; 0481, Landing Support Specialist; 0491 Logistics/Mobility Chief; 2311, Ammunition Technician; 3043, Supply Chain and Materiel Management Specialist; 3047, MOS Supply Chain Manager; 3051, Inventory Management Specialist; 3531, Motor Vehicle Operator; or 3537, Motor Transport Operations Chief.

SOCS M prerequisites: Must possess MOSs 1141, Electrician; 1142, Engineer Equipment Electrical Systems Technician; 1341, Engineer Equipment Mechanic; 1342, Small Craft Mechanic; 3521, Automotive Maintenance Technician; or 3529, Motor Transport Maintenance Chief.

SOCS O prerequisites: Must possess MOSs 2111, Small Arms Repairer/Technician; 2112, Precision Weapons Repairer/Technician; or 2171, Electro-Optical Ordnance Repairer.

SOCS U prerequisites: Must be a corporal and above.

Must possess MOS 7314, UAS Operations Specialist or 7316, Small UAS Operations Specialist.

Must hold a flight physical per the MANMED and meet MANMED requirements regarding color, depth, vision, and cognitive abilities.

Requirements

Complete the Special Operations Training Course (STC) (M03DTZK).

Complete the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape (SERE) Level C Course (M03M47K).

Complete the MARSOC Special Operations Force (SOF) Level 1 Training, as related to Marine’s PMOS.

Must pass the intelligence testing and psychological evaluation.

Note: Waivers will be considered on a case by case basis.

COMMARFORSOC is the approving authority for waivers.
