8831 - Environmental Engineering Management Officer

Summary

Environmental Engineering Management Officers help protect the Marine Corps mission by interpreting and complying with international agreements and federal, state, local, and DoD environmental regulations.

They act as an advisor to their commander on environmental requirements and provide an operational perspective to environmental staff.

They develop and apply a variety of skills and techniques to address engineering, science, management, and policy-level issues to ensure optimum management of their programs to balance environmental regulations with operational requirements.

They manage staff’s which conduct and guide studies, analyses, and projects assessing both qualitative and quantitative aspects of environmental, compliance, pollution prevention, and conservation for Marine Corps installations and major commands.

Prerequisites

Must possess a master’s degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) course of study in graduate engineering management (GEM), or possess a master’s or bachelor’s degree in a related discipline from an accredited institution.

Requirements

Subjects covered in the core courses of the programs listed above should include environmental systems engineering, environmental policy, environmental law, and sustainable development.

Officers who possess a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, science, or management, or related degree and who have a strong desire to participate in the Marine Corps environmental program may be awarded the 8831 FMOS.

If pursuing a masters degree at AFIT, the following environmentally focused sequences within the curriculum will meet the requirement of MOS 8831, Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Environmental and Infrastructure Threats and Hazards.

Officers who have 6 months of applicable environmental management experience, and who have a strong desire to participate in the Marine Corps environmental program, may be awarded the 8831 FMOS dependent on the 8831 occupational field sponsor approval.

Duties

Acts as a technical environmental liaison at the international, federal, state, and local levels.

Provide an operational perspective to environmental staff to balance environmental requirements with the installation’s/major command’s mission.

Manage environmental impact studies and analyses that address the consequences of military installations and major commands operations on the natural environment.

Analyze environmental impacts and health effects associated with a variety of activities and substances (e.g.

fuel storage, drinking water, hazardous waste disposal, asbestos, pesticides, and endangered species).

Monitor installations and major commands compliance with applicable environmental agreements, laws, regulations, and directives such as U.S.

laws and executive orders, code of federal regulation and department of defense policies.

Manage a civilian environmental staff of scientists and engineers to; determine and validate environmental risks, develop corrective action plans, program and advocate for resources, and oversee the execution of resources to achieve environmental compliance.

Advise commander on environmental management priorities and influence decision-making practices at installations and major commands.

Ensure that environmental concerns are addressed and that environmental considerations are integrated into both daily and long-term planning processes.
