GM Gunner's Mate
A Gunner’s Mate (GM) in the Navy is responsible for operating and maintaining ordnance equipment, small arms, and magazines. They also work with electrical and electronic circuitry, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
GMs operate and coordinate maintenance on: Guided missile launching systems Missile launching groups Guns Gun mounts Small arms Torpedoes Associated handling equipment
GMs also perform detailed electrical, electronic, hydraulic, and mechanical casualty analyses.
GMs specialize in a variety of weapons, including: Shotguns, Semiautomatic and automatic rifles, Pistols, Submachine guns, Machine guns, Explosives, Mounted weapons systems, Rockets, Torpedoes, Missiles. GMs must meet special eligibility standards for reliability, integrity, and trustworthiness.
They must also have: The ability to perform detailed work and keep accurate records Normal hearing and color perception
GMs require skills in electronics, mechanical systems, and hydraulics. They attend 10 weeks of formal training in GM ‘A’ school. After ‘A’ school, most graduates immediately attend specific equipment/system specific ‘C’ schools lasting from five days to 14 weeks.
