STG Sonar Technician Surface
In the U.S. Navy, STG stands for Sonar Technician - Surface.
STGs are responsible for: Operating sonar systems, underwater fire control systems, and supporting equipment on surface ships Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting sonar and oceanographic data Identifying sounds produced by surface ships, torpedoes, submarines, evasion devices, sonar transmissions, marine life, and natural phenomena Operating sonar sensors for detection and classification of contacts Aiding in safe navigation and search-and-rescue operations
STGs are also responsible for: Solving Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) problems Conducting ordnance evolutions Supervising training of personnel in operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment Administering a long-range maintenance program Preparing quarterly maintenance schedules
STGs undergo mandatory training and education, including: Recruit Training STG “A” School at Naval Station Great Lakes, IL NKO (E-Learning)
Some training may be directed by your chain of command, such as Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint courses. The remainder is voluntary.
