CSEL stands for Command Senior Enlisted Leader. CSELs are also known as senior enlisted advisors (SEAs). They:
Ensure and enhance naval warfighting readiness
Provide leadership and mentorship to the Navy
Advise commanders and COs in partnership with deputy commanders, chiefs of staff, or executive officers (XO)
Represent their commander, communicating the commander’s goals and direction for the command to the enlisted workforce
Represent the enlisted personnel’s views and concerns to the commander
CSELs are warranted when a command is not large enough for a CO but rather an OIC.
There are 20 command master chiefs within the US Navy, plus those who serve at Joint Commands. As of Oct 3, 2023, the average annual pay for a Command Master Chief in the United States is $116,404 a year.
