The U.S. Navy’s Information Warfare Community (IWC) was created in 2009. The IWC is involved in all aspects of naval operations.
Information Warfare Officers (IWOs):
Deliver information to decision makers
Attack, defend, and exploit networks
Capitalize on vulnerabilities in the information domain
Plan, implement, and manage multiple networks
Enable sensor-to-shooter tactical and operational information exchange
Provide timely and relevant situational awareness to the Command
The IWC is made up of six reserve communities:
Meteorology and Oceanography
Maritime Cyber Warfare Officer (MCWO)
The IWC also includes Information Warfare Specialists, who are members of the Navy’s enlisted force. The IW pin recognizes those who have acquired the specific professional skills, knowledge, and military experience that qualify them for service in the Navy’s information warfare activities.
