639X Air Traffic Control Specialty LDO
In the United States Navy, Air Traffic Control Limited Duty Officers (LDOs) are technical managers who plan, organize, manage, and direct all aspects of air traffic control operations. They are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Air Traffic Control LDOs have the following duties: Controlling and directing air traffic at airfields and on aircraft carriers Providing aircraft with critical information on other air traffic, navigation systems, and airfield conditions
To become an Air Traffic Controller in the Navy, you must: Complete an FAA approved education program Pass a medical exam Complete on-the-job training Attend the Air Traffic Controller “A” school in Pensacola, Florida
The education program can take anywhere from 2-4 years to complete, depending on the level of degree pursued. The Air Traffic Controller “A” school is approximately 20 weeks long.
You must also have a high school diploma or GED.
